Validity Analysis of Pa Scale in MMPI

Abstract
Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory which has the nonambiguous self-reference statements and structured response format is most widely used to the various clinical and other situations.
These include overall differentiation of normal from abnormal or persons predisposed to abnormal development as in screening. Only basis of the item construction and selection. is empirical keying strategy rather than rational item construction. Gynther and Green say that psychological status item such as many MMPI items are influenced by cultural differenc¡þes, but empirical validations of each items are not evaluated in our cultural situation. This study is aimed to evaluate differential validity of 40 paranoid scale items in MMPI. Materials are consisted of MMPI answer sheet of 150 normal and 150 paranoid schizophrenics which is instructed according formal instruction. Mean profiles of each group and rate of responses
items are analyzed. The results were as follow;
1. Pattern of L,F, K is A shape in paranoid schizophrenics, but normal group is V shape. 2. Clinical scales of MMPI of paranoid schizophrenics are more elevated than normal sample, particularly Pa and Sc scale.
3. Percentage of responses which is responded to abnormal direction is only 22% in normal samples and 50% in paranoid schizophrenics.
4. About 50% of response rate which yes or no answered to the items in the normal group is 12% among 40 items. These items are suspicious its differential capacity.
5. Items which is marked suspicious its differential validity and reverse scoring direction is rather rational in the empirical strategy are three items.
6. "Yes" response rate of obvious items associated with vivid paranoid schizophrenic symptoms is 49%. Whether subtle item or obvious item is more differential capaity are not confirmed in this sample.
